Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza translates to “Mouth of the well of the Itzas”
and is the most famous of Mayan sites. Excavations have been going
on here for over 100 years and archaeologists can still only speculate
what happened at Chichen Itza and why. The site flourished in
the classic period of the Maya between 300 and 900 AD and then
appears to have been abandoned, then re-inhabited around 1000
AD when the Toltecs arrived from central Mexico. Today the combination
of Maya and Toltec architecture is clearly evident at this archaeological
site.
Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres is “The Island of Women” and known
for its relaxed tropical setting and turquoise blue, warm water.
Enjoy quaint shops and exotic restaurants in a very picturesque
setting. Garrafon Beach Park is located on Isla Mujeres and offers
snorkeling, scuba and sea trekking. Inquire about the ferries
going to Isla Mujeres.
Cozumel
Cozumel is relaxing and laid back. Known for its world renowned
diving, Cozumel is known as Mexico’s
“dive central”. Snorkelers and divers will not want
to miss the famous cenotes of the spectacular Dos Ojos Cave System.
The best reef diving is along the coast just south of town, with
many reefs for different diving skills. When you are not diving,
you can rent a buggy, car or motorcycle and drive around discovering
the charm of the island. There are ferries to Cozumel from the
downtown dock in Playa del Carmen.
Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is a pleasant beach town and the home to the
ferries that cross to Cozumel. The town center is situated so
that you are never far from the beach. Many quaint shops offer
incredible variety in a small town atmosphere.
Tulum
Tulum is mounted on the edge of a cliff and known as “Walled
City”. This abandoned city towers above the deep turquoise
of the Caribbean and a beautiful white sandy beach. The city within
the walls was only inhabited by the nobles, high priests, and
esteemed citizens; the lower classes lived in simple wood and
thatch huts beyond. Tulum is to the south of Cancun
and is the only major Mexican ruins to overlook the Caribbean
Sea.
Xel-Ha
Xel-Ha is a 10-acre park of lagoons and was a sacred Maya city
and important commercial center. It is composed of tropical forests,
wetland and marine environments. There are 27 fascinating ruins
and 345 species of birds. Xel-Ha is considered as the largest
natural aquarium in the world and interconnected with series of
clear water lagoons and is great relaxing fun for the whole family.
Xcaret
Xcaret is a mix of Mayan history, archaeology and a dash of
elaborate spectacle. The archeological park features Mayan ruins,
a small museum, a wild bird aviary, a zoo, butterfly pavilion,
aquarium and a botanical garden. Xcaret is an excellent place
to go horseback riding, swimming with the dolphins, swimming,
snorkeling or just floating down the underground rivers.
Coba
Coba is the largest of Yucatan’s archeological sites and
the least excavated of all the major sites on the Yucatan peninsula.
A striking site with magnificent pyramids, Coba was once home
to as many as 40,000 Mayans. The Nohoch Mul pyramid is the tallest
on the peninsula reaching 140 feet into the sky!
Centro
Centro, also known as Cancun City, is not heavily promoted but
is the heartbeat of the entire area. Centro is a pleasant city
with some great restaurants, modern shopping facilities and is
a semi-peaceful diversion to the glitz of the tourist zone. When
you are ready for a brake from the beach, take a short drive to
Centro and see where the locals live and spend much of their time.
