Pirate Ship Cruise
Recapture the feeling of sailing like an old Mexican pirate
aboard the Sunderland. This 110 foot enchanting square rigger
was built in 1885 and is available for a two hour scenic adventure
past Land’s End. Listen to Pirate Lores and Legends, narrated
by the Captain, hear the thunder of cannons and feel the salt
of the ocean just as the pirates did in days gone by.
La Paz
La Paz is located on the Sea of Cortez, 100 miles north of Cabo
San Lucas. Originally a pirates haven, La Paz is the state’s
largest city and the capital of the state of Baja California Sur
and known for the most picturesque sunsets seen anywhere. A trip
to La Paz is a full day excursion which may include shopping,
strolling, and lunch on the beach or in one of the many seaside
restaurants. Carnival in La Paz is held during 6 days before Ash
Wednesday and is one giant party with colorful parades, street
dancing, carnival rides and a great family atmosphere.
Miraflores
Miraflores is a quaint little town approximately 25 miles north
of San Jose del Cabo. Miraflores is known for the quality of the
local leather products and the natural hot springs located outside
of town. A quiet, relaxing drive, Miraflores is a fantastic way
to spend a half day. The combination of a trip to Miraflores and
then proceeding on to Santiago for lunch is both relaxing and
enjoyable.
Santiago
Santiago is a small down to earth town approximately 35 miles
north of San Jose del Cabo and 1.5 miles north of the Tropic of
Cancer. Santiago dates back to 1723 when an Italian priest built
a mission there. The area is known for farming, fruit orchards
and the only zoo in Southern Baja. The Santiago area offers the
option of great day hikes into the mountains and the opportunity
to see real cowboys from many of the working farms and ranches
in the area.
Buena Vista – Los Barriles
Buena Vista – Los Barriles is 45 miles north of San Jose
del Cabo. Excellent sport fishing, windsurfing and tranquil beaches
have made this are of the East Cape famous. Several resort hotels
line the shore of the Sea of Cortez offering travelers a more
secluded vacation alternative to Los Cabos.
San Bartolo
San Bartolo is a scenic tropical village 10 miles north of Los
Barriles as you climb into the hills. San Bartolo is a great place
to stop and buy avocados, mangos, locally made candies and some
of the most delicious fruit filled empanadas. This a very pleasant
town complete with thatched roof homes.
San Antonio
San Antonio is 18 miles north of San Bartolo. In times past,
San Antonio was a mining town where silver was discovered in 1748.
An unusual church, many old buildings and the remains of abandoned
mines are ideal imagery to be captured on film.
El Triunfo
El Triunfo, another small mining town, is 4.5 miles north of
San Antonio and home to some small scale miners who work the local
mountains. In 1862, gold and silver were discovered here, but
a hurricane came in and flooded all of the local mines leaving
the area almost deserted. Now, the local economy is almost totally
based around a basket weaving co-op which sell their product in
a couple of small shops.
After you leave El Triunfo you can continue on another 12 miles
where you will meet the Junction with Highway 19. From here you
can continue straight to La Paz or head south to Todos Santo and
back to Cabo San Lucas.
Todos Santos
Todos Santos is approximately 50 miles north of Cabo San Lucas
on Highway 19. This is a beautiful one hour drive through the
mountains and along the ruggedly beautiful Pacific coast. This
small town has a history dating back to the early 1700’s
and was originally the location of a Jesuit mission and sugar
cane and mango plantations. Today, Todos Santos is known for being
an artists colony with several shops featuring the work of local
artists. Todos Santos is also known for quality local fresh fruits
and vegetables in addition to handmade furniture and good surfing.
Browsing the colorful shops and lunch at one of the great restaurants
is a wonderful way to spend some time in the home town of the
famous Hotel California located next to the town square.
East Cape
The East Cape is populated primarily by North Americans who
have established permanent and vacation homes in instant neighborhoods.
An unnamed dirt road runs north about 40 miles from San Jose to
the main East Cape towns. It’s a great adventure if you
rent a car or take a tour.
Cabo Pulmo
A small village with about 100 residents sits beside Baja Sur’s
largest coral reef. Scuba companies in Los Cabos run trips to
Cabo Pulmo and the village has a dive shop and rental cottages.
This is the place to stop and snorkel and chow down on fish tacos.
Windsurfers gravitate to Los Barriles from November to March
when the winds are at their best. Fishermen hang out at casual
lodges in Buena Vista. Both communities have shops and restaurants
you can explore.
Highway 1, which is paved, is recommended for the drive back
from the East Cape to Los Cabos.
